A straw hat on an uncertain road.
1995: original Super Famicom release in Japan.
By Chunsoft.
Shiren followed Torneko’s Great Adventure into the Mystery Dungeon tradition, this time with an original wandering hero. The first game appeared on Super Famicom in Japan in 1995. Its later Nintendo DS remake brought that particular adventure to a wider international audience.
The journey is readable one step at a time. Enemies act as the player acts, while limited supplies and changing dungeon floors make familiar routes uncertain. Items deserve experimentation: something unimpressive in an inventory can become the answer to a very specific danger.
A village, a travelling companion and a recognisable landscape give the repeated expedition a sense of place. They also change the emotional weight of returning after a failure. There is still a road worth walking again.
Shiren belongs inside traditional roguelike history, not in a separate category merely because it uses tiles and a controller. The later series has accumulated different rescue systems, persistent elements and special dungeons; their details should not all be projected backwards onto the 1995 original.
