The wilderness between the dungeons.

1994: first release; 2012: crowdfunded revival.

By Thomas Biskup and collaborators.

ADOM widened the expedition into a campaign. Thomas Biskup’s game first appeared in 1994, placing its dungeons within the Drakalor Chain, with wilderness travel, settlements and quests. Its corruption system made the spreading disorder of the setting a pressure on the character.

That mixture gives it a different shape from a single downward crawl. The player must learn a world as well as individual fights. Routes, obligations and preparations can matter long before the next dangerous room. A character’s story can end far from the main objective.

ADOM also offers a useful case of how a long-running personal project survives. Development slowed after 2002. A 2012 crowdfunding campaign financed renewed work and a broader team, followed by a commercial edition in 2015 with a graphical presentation.

The later interface did not replace the underlying traditional game. It made its places and creatures easier to read at a glance. ADOM’s long history includes both the spare character display and those later tiles.
