A dungeon small enough to carry.
2003: first Game Boy Advance release.
By Jeff Lait.
Jeff Lait published the first POWDER release on 31 May 2003 for the Game Boy Advance. That platform imposed a productive constraint: a roguelike had to work through a handful of buttons and a small display.
POWDER kept the dangerous dungeon, equipment, uncertain items and turn-by-turn decisions. Its interface made those systems available without assuming a full keyboard. Later ports carried the game to other handhelds and desktop systems.
The gods form another distinctive part of its design. Actions can please or anger them, and advancement is tied to divine patronage. A character develops through play and those relationships, rather than following only a fixed class chosen at the beginning.
In the larger history, POWDER is a reminder that an approachable interface need not empty a game of consequences. The author worked inside real hardware limits and kept the things that made a small dungeon interesting.
Its surviving release log is also unusually good evidence. It records incremental changes, early problems and the first public ROM, rather than supplying only a retrospective birthday.
