the unwarm fire
At the top of Duul-Asdaat is a library sealed in clear ice. Ten thousand books sleep under it. A gold fire burns in the hearth and gives no heat.
Malachar sits there writing. The south remembers him as the necromancer who froze a country. The truth is worse and kinder. Something old is dreaming beneath the mountains, and the cold is the wall he built around it.

The manuscript explains how to keep that wall standing. It also explains how to break it. The job was to bring the book south, but finding it is not the same as knowing what to do with it.
Wintercry keeps track of small things on the way north: bread accepted, a letter carried, a dead man’s eyes closed, a truth told when lying would be easier. They do not add points to a moral score. Later, when the dark asks what still makes the wanderer human, those are the available answers.
The menus keep the same ink and paper close at hand. I want even the quiet parts of the interface to feel like they belong to the book.
